At 16 and 14, brothers Sahej and Karam Kandhari founded Home Away, an initiative born from their personal journeys and a deep-seated commitment to social good. Their inspiration came from their own experience of moving from Dubai to boarding school, where they initially faced the challenges of adapting to a new environment and being away from home. For Sahej, it was through sports and community activities that he found his sense of belonging and comfort. For Karam, it was the impact of leading with gratitude and bringing individuals from disparate backgrounds together for shared, celebratory experiences. This personal revelation became the cornerstone of Home Away's mission.
Their dedication to this cause is also rooted in a decade of social work. Since a young age, they have been volunteering with initiatives like YPO and Care to Share, helping to pack and distribute hampers to worker communities, particularly during Ramadan. These experiences gave them a profound understanding of the loneliness and isolation that come with being away from family and community.
Driven by this empathy, Sahej and Karam founded Home Away with a strong belief that inclusion, access to community, and empowerment through education and opportunity are the keys to building thriving communities. They created Home Away to provide migrant workers with the same sense of connection and support that helped them, using sports, community activities, and celebration as powerful tools to uplift and connect those who have left their homes for a better future.
